Nurses take NCLEX for US jobs starting today

Some 4,000 Filipino nurses seeking jobs in the United States will take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) starting today until December at the Pearson Professional Center in Makati City.

Dante Ang, chief of the presidential task force on NCLEX, said at least 90 Filipino nurses will take the exam on the first day today,to be administered by Pearsonvue officials from Monday to Friday in two shifts, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. onwards at the test site.

"Our Filipino nurses can save a lot now that the NCLEX will be held here in Manila. This great opportunity comes a great responsibility for us to maintain the integrity of the exam. We should not endanger the credibility of NCLEX here," he said in an interview.

Ang said Filipino nurses can save as much as R100,000 each because they don’t have to fly to other NCLEX international sites abroad such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and Saipan where most nurses had earlier taken the test.

"They have to pay only the 0 examination fee and an additional 0 when they schedule their examination unlike before, the transport cost was included in their expenses in taking the NCLEX," he said.

He added the examinees of the US nursing board came from greater parts of Metro Manila and no foreign nationals have registered to take the NCLEX in its new international test site in Makati.

Casey Marks, associate executive director for business operations of Pearsonvue, said he expects the first NCLEX in Manila to be successful and leaves nothing to chance in opening the new test center

"The US nusing board places a high value on security and the integrity of its testing program. We were very thorough in our decision to expand testing to the Philippines and are able to do so by utilizing the latest in biometric technology through the Pearson Professional Center," he said.

The United States’ National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) board of directors had chosen Manila as an international NCLEX site last February, following the Philippine government’s request to host the NCLEX.

It was the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO), led by Ang, which initiated the efforts and convinced the NCSBN to open a testing site in Manila.

Officials of Task Force NCLEX, composed of the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO), Philippine Nursing Association (PNA), Board of Nursing (BON), the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE),and the Association of Nursing School Deans will monitor of the exam. (Raymund Antonio)
